Helsinki-based curatorial agency PUBLICS has launched a hand-painted mural installation featuring work by Finland-based Egyptian artist Mona Marzouk.

Titled Trials and Trails, the installation redeploys selective images from Marzouk's earlier paintings on the windows of PUBLICS' building.

"The artist’s meticulously painted assemblages combine fragments from diverse image archives. The work engages with the transparency of the large public facing windows, the spatial depth of glass, its reflective surface, and its materiality," the installation description reads.

"Her painted assemblages – with distinct semi-industrial aesthetics and colours – bring together fragments from diverse image archives: ancient weapons and agricultural tools, contemporary infrastructures of surveillance, the world of finance and popular court cases to create emblematic objects that reprocess the various histories of language, law, struggle, labour and injustice into compact forms."

Trials and Trails is the second of PUBLICS window-sited public art commissions. In 2019, PUBLICS co-commissioned This Is Finland by Hlynur Hallsson.

Marzouk's work was commissioned by PUBLICS in September and scheduled to be launched on 5 June. Due to the Black Lives Matter Helsinki March which took place in the first week of June, the opening was moved to 10 June.

Marzouk's work is based on the artist’s series Renewal and Trayvon which was shown as part of the Today Is Our Tomorrow collaborative festival.

PUBLICS is a curatorial agency in Helsinki, Finland

Born in Alexandria, Marzouk has established herself in Helsinki. She has also exhibited her works in Egypt's Gypsum and Townhouse galleries, as well as in Europe, the USA and China.
