An exhibition of the paintings of Vessela Farid opens today Sunday, 23 January at the Zamalek Art gallery.
The collection includes around 40 pieces, including some that have never been exhibited by this prolific artist.
Vassela Farid died at the age of 93 in 2007 and left behind a vast collection of work. Originally from Belgium, Farid came to Egypt in 1938 and lived here the rest of her life.
"Many describe her art as more Egyptian than that of Egyptian artists," said Paul Geday, the curator of the exhibition and her nephew.
Farid’s paintings are figurative and her subjects are mostly Egyptian women, especially towards her later years.
“The work boasts of its adamant refusal to fall victim to the romanticised Orientalist wash that most artists sweep across paintings of Egypt,” states the press release.
