Google's celebration marked the 11th anniversary of the UAE poetry community's annual award for female Emirati poets in Al-Suwaidi's honour.

Ousha bint Khalifa Al-Suwaidi, who died in 2018 at the age of 98, is recognised as one of the greatest Nabati (a vernacular Arabic poetry of the Arabian Peninsula) poets of the 20th century.

Al-Suwaidi, popularly known as Fatat Al-Arab (“Girl of the Arabs”) , was born in 1920 in the Emirati city of Al-Ain to a family that loved literature. As a young teenager, she gained recognition for her poetry recitals, becoming the first Emirati woman to do so in the male-dominated field.

Today, she is remembered for opening the doors to a new generation of female Emirati poets.

In addition to the poetry award in her honour, the Women's Museum in Dubai also has a section dedicated to Al-Suwaidi.

Alongside the doodle, Google has included a note saying "the Arabian Gulf and desert landscapes inspired many of her poems, which touch on themes such as love, wisdom, patriotism and nostalgia. The poems, written in Nabati, describe her personal experiences in the United Arab Emirates, as well as the country’s rich culture and past."

The doodle was designed by an Abu Dhabi-based Emirati artist Reem Al-Mazrouei.
