Egyptian artist Salma El-Sherif represented her country at the Open Art Exhibition at Nairobi’s National Museum of Kenya with her painting Wherever It Flows 2, a reflective depiction of the Nile that underscores Egypt’s enduring cultural and emotional connection to its lifeline river.

El-Sherif's painting captivated audiences at what is considered one of East Africa’s largest cultural showcases. The artwork depicts a stationary felucca, a traditional, narrow wooden sailing boat used on the Nile River in Egypt.

The felucca evokes themes of tranquillity, nostalgia, and spiritual connection, offering a poignant reflection on Egypt’s enduring bond with the river.

Participating for the second consecutive year, El-Sherif said the Nile is more than a waterway; it is a historical and emotional thread that ties Egyptians to their homeland, even when abroad.

Her previous piece, Wherever It Flows 1, portrayed feluccas gliding across the Nile near Aswan, while this year’s sequel deepens that narrative through a moment of silent contemplation.

H.E. Ambassador Hatem Yousri, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Republic of Kenya, attended the exhibition’s opening and praised El-Sherif’s work as a powerful example of Egypt’s soft power and cultural diplomacy.

He noted that the painting conveys a meaningful message to Kenyan audiences about the Nile’s existential importance to Egypt and its role in connecting civilizations.

The ambassador added that his participation aligns with the directives of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, and reflects the commitment of Egyptian embassies abroad to support Egyptian communities and encourage engagement in international cultural and artistic events, drawing on Egypt’s soft power embodied in its talented citizens.

The exhibition, which ran from 24 to 26 October, featured more than 250 artists from across the continent. El-Sherif’s continued participation, the ambassador noted, highlights both her artistic success and the growing recognition of Egyptian creativity in global cultural spaces.
