Art Alert: Talk on prevailing art themes during Nasser era at ArtTalks

A talk by author and scholar Patrick Kane on prevailing art themes during the Nasser era will be held 18 December at ArtTalks gallery in Zamalek

Author Patrick Kane will be on hand at ArtTalks gallery on Wednesday, 18 December to talk about art trends in Egypt from the Nasser era to the present, ideas drawn from his most recent book, 'The Politics of Art in Modern Egypt: Aesthetics, Ideology and Nation-building.'

Kane's book, published in February, discusses the rise of significant art movements in Egypt, such as surrealism and the Contemporary Art Group, and the context of political and social conflict that has influenced art and cultural production in the country from the 1920s to the 1960s.

Kane holds a PhD in Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He is currently Instructor of General Education at Sharjah Women's College, Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab Emirates.

The talk is part of ArtTalks' ongoing mission to provide a forum on the roots of modern Egyptian art.

Also at ArtTalks until January 15 is a solo exhibition by Cairo-based, multidisciplinary artist Nadine Hammam, entitled “WHY.”
