'The Thread and the Wall' film, part of the Women On Walls (WOW) graffiti project, will be screened on 21 May at Megawra's hub.

The film is directed by Egyptian director Mohamed Khaled and discourses about everyday problems encountered by Egyptian women as well as document the Women on Walls project.

Women on Walls was launched in early 2013 with the aim of using graffiti to both focus on women's issues and rights, and to empower female graffiti artists. Back in 2013, over 40 artists brought graffiti art to the streets of four Egyptian cities: Mansoura, Alexandria, Cairo and Luxor.

The documentary traces the hopes and challenges experienced by participating artists, as well as uncover the overlap between the creative process and the participants' personal lives. By doing that, the film aspires to accurately present women's role in society and communicate its intricacies.

Last April, WOW organised a five-day graffiti event in downtown Cairo, as part of the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF), calling on street artists and the general public to create graffiti under the theme of women unchained. 

Megawra (The Built Environment Collective) is an architectural hub and a space for young students, architects and others interested in debates regarding architecture and urbanism.
