The Arab region will be one of the special focuses of the 46th edition of the Berlinale Forum, a special section within the framework of the 66th Berlin International film Festival, scheduled to take place between 11 and 22 February, organisers announced.
Arab cinema will be represented with films from Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Saudi Arabia.
The selection represents mostly young directors whose works explore both the past and present of their homelands.
The films include: In A Magical Substance Flows into Me by artist Jumana Manna (Palestine), Akher ayam el madina (In the Last Days of the City, Egypt) by Tamer El Said, documentary Makhdoumin (A Maid for Each, Lebanon) by Maher Abi Samra’s, Barakah yoqabil Barakah (Barakah Meets Barakah, Saudi Arabia) by Mahmoud Sabbagh and Manazil bela abwab (Houses without Doors) by Syrian-Armenian director Avo Kaprealian.
The 46th Berlinale Forum will also screen films from European, Latin American and Asian directors.
Organised independently by the Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V. (Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art), the forum aims at shedding light on new trends in world cinema and fresh narrative forms.
According to the Berlinale website, "narrative features that go beyond the mainstream are presented alongside of documentary and hybrid forms. The forum highlights directorial debuts and innovative works by younger filmmakers."
