Four Star Films, a company that distributes for Universal Paramount Movies in Egypt, announced that the new film hit The Danish Girl will be released in Egyptian theatres on Wednesday 20 January.

Last week, the Oscar-nominated film was withdrawn from Qatari cinemas by local authorities and also failed to pass censors in five other Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait.

The film is a 2015 British pseudo-biographical drama directed by Tom Hooper, based on the 2000 fictional novel of the same name by David Ebershoff, and is loosely inspired by the life of Danish painter Lili Elbe, one of the first known people to go through sexual reassignment surgeries.

The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, Matthias Schoenaerts as Hans Axgil, and Ben Whishaw as Henrik.

The Danish Girl has garnered positive reviews, and has been nominations for several awards, including Oscar nominations for Redmagne and Vikander in the categories of best actor and best supporting actress, as well as nominations for costume and production design.  

The Danish Girl will be released in Galaxy Mall of Arabia (6th October), Americana Plaza in (6th October), Porto Cairo (New Cairo City), Bander (Maadi), Wonderland (Nasr City), Odeon (Cairo Downtown), and Cineplex Green Plaza (Alexandria).
