Eleven novels were selected to participate in the 2016 'Books at Berlinale,' part of the upcoming 66th Berlin International Film Festival, according to a press release published on Monday.
The selected literary productions will be discussed in a pitching session at the Berlinale Co-Production Market on 16 February, in which film producers will meet with participating publishing houses and literary agents and explore the possibility of transforming such works into film productions.
Chosen from a total of 130 books, the 11 selected novels include: A Robot in the Garden (Deborah Install-UK), Spy Toys (Mark Powers-UK), The Ice-Cream Makers (Ernest van der Kwast-The Netherlands), Der Trick (or The Trick-Emanuel Bergmann-Switzerland), Hool (Philipp Winkler-Germany), Das achte Leben (Für Brilka) (Or The Eighth Life For Brilka-Nino Haratischwili-Germany), Poppyseed Lemon Cake (Cristina Campos-Spain), Soraya (Meltem Yılmaz-Turkey), Run Away (Guy Delisle-France), The Eyes of the Lake (Jessica Schiefauer-Sweden), and Konrad oder Das Kind aus der Konservenbüchse (or Conrad: The Factory-Made Boy-Christine Nöstlinger-Germany).
According to Monday's press release, this year’s “spectrum of themes, genres, and protagonists on display in the selected works…is very broad, ranging from an extended Georgian family and desperate hooligans to canned kids and grumpy magicians. Themes of current high relevance, such as a young Syrian woman’s experiences as a refugee in Meltem Yılmaz’s novel “Soraya”, are presented side-by-side with fantastic scenarios and visions of the future, such as “A Robot in the Garden” from British author Deborah Install, which investigates what artificial intelligence has to tell us about what it means to be human.”
Books at Berlinale was founded in 2006, and is co-organised by the Berlin International Film Festival and the Frankfurt Book Fair.
The aforementioned press release quoted Dieter Kosslick, the festival’s director as saying that, “together with the Frankfurt Book Fair, we have established this platform as an important event for active exchange between the worlds of publishing and film, which has enabled us to support collaborations between publishing houses, literary agents, and film producers.”
The 66th Berlin International Film Fesival is scheduled to take place between 11 and 22 February.
