The film ‘Waste Land’ by British filmmaker Lucy Walker will be screened several times at a variety of cultural venues in Cairo between 10 April and 4 May.
The first screening will take place on 10 April at Mashrabia Gallery. Check the programme below for more details.
According to the event press release, Waste Land is a 2010 British-Brazilian documentary that records the work of Brazilian artist Vik Muniz at the Jardim Gramacho dump site on the outskirts of Rio De Janeiro, where he collaborated with the community of catadores (garbage collectors) to turn disposable materials into artworks.
Waste Land premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in 2010 and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in the same year.
The film will be also screened in April and May at the Netherlands Flemish Institute, the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre, the Balassi Institute, the Office of the Hungarian Cultural Counsellor, and the Italian Cultural Institute.
The screening of Waste Land is part of ‘From Rags To Riches,’ a project of up-cycled public art in Cairo initiated by Baad El-Bahr for Cultural Development and curated by Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art and co-funded by the Dutch embassy.
