Screenwriting contest

The Jesuit Cultural Centre in collaboration with Port Tawfik Film — an independent production company for film, television and music, — and Sard Company for Drama Writing have issued an open call for submissions in a screenwriting contest. The contest will provide three screenwriters with the opportunity to develop their scripts, which will then receive artistic supervision to be turned into film productions.

The three winning scripts will be further developed in a workshop conducted in collaboration with Sard Company for Drama Writing and under the supervision of Egyptian scriptwriter Mariam Naoum.

Under the artistic supervision of Port Tawfik Film, which will also supervise the production process, three directors will be tasked with bringing those scripts to the silver screen.

Over recent years, Naoum has established herself as a skillful sculptor of stories with an impressive repertoire comprising the film Wahed Sefr (One-Zero, 2009), the TV show Gamea Moanas Salem (Feminine Plural), and an array of TV drama series: El-Shamaa El-Ahmar (Stamped with Red Wax, 2010), co-written with the late Nadine Shams and Naglaa El-Hiddini, Zaat (2013), Moga Harra (Heat Wave, 2013) also co-written with Nadine Shams, Segn El-Nesa (Women's Prison, 2014), and most recently Taht El Saytara (Under Control, 2015). She moulds raw works of art steeped in honesty and realism.

Upon graduating from the screenwriting section at the Higher Institute of Cinema in 2000, Naoum spent nine years experimenting with short films, children’s films, TV ads, and documentaries before undertaking scriptwriting for TV and feature films.

The deadline for applications is 20 May 2016.

Applicants should send a three-page script treatment for a 20-30 minute feature short film whose events unfold over one day in a Cairo-based apartment. Applicants are also requested to send their CV and any past scripts.
