Directed by Todd Phillips, film Joker, will be screened at the Tahrir Cultural Centre on Sunday 22 December.

According to the Guinness World Records, the highly controvercial film has become the first R-rated film to exceed USD 1 billion at the worldwide box office as of 25 November 2019, coming after the previous box office recordee in R-rated category, Disney's film Deadpool (2016) which reached USD 780 million.

"The film Joker is a fictional character that was created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger, and Jerry Robinson in 1940. Since that time everyone has either fallen in love with that character or despised him. Over the years the joker has been portrayed by so many talented actors, each actor showing the side they believed the joker was all about, today we have one more astonishing performance to add to the ledger," writes Donia Mounir in her review of the film for Ahram Online.

"Both the director and actor Joaquin Phoenix who plays the role of Arthur Fleck/Joker take us down to the deepest and darkest of holes, through tackling a critical topic that for many years was considered a taboo: the mental illness."

Programme:
Sunday 22 December, 7.30pm
Tahrir Cultural Centre, AUC Tahrir campus
