Ahram Online , Wednesday 17 Feb 2021

In its fourth edition, the festival will screen 135 films, 50 of which will take part in the official competition

In its fourth edition, Visions: Cairo Egyptian Short Film Festival will take place between 21 and 29 March 2021 at the American University in Cairo (AUC)’s Downtown campus.

Organised by the AUC, the festival is presided over by Malek Khoury, who also heads the jury, and Arab Lotfi is its artistic director.

This year, the festival saw over 300 submissions by Egyptian young filmmakers presenting feature films, documentaries, and animated films. This large number of submissions was recorded despite the fact that the window of accepting films was open for one month only.

Following the viewing, a total of 135 films — roughly 46 percent of total nominations — were selected to participate in the festival.

85 films will participate in the festival’s panorama section and 50 in the official competition.

Titles that will take part in the competition include: Kismet by Mohamed Morad; Life Appointment by Amr Mostafa; Mama, I Want To Tell You Something by Eman Magdy; The Visit by Ahmed Abdel-Hay; 20 Pounds per Month by Hassan Ayman Abu Douma; The Veil by Mohamed Youssef; The Journey by Sara Gheita; The Woman’s Bakery by Mona Farouk; Flatmates by Rania Zahra; This is My Night by Youssef Noaman; 600 km by Mohamed Ashraf Salah; Henet Ward by Morad Mostafa; Searching For Amal by Shehab Abdel-Hafez; Fasten Your Seatbelts When Seated by Samir Radwan; among many others.

The complete list of the titles to be screened in both panorama and the official competition can be found on the Visions’ Facebook page.

The festival’s jury will be headed by Malek Khoury, a professor of film studies in the Department of the Arts of the AUC. Khouri is also former chair of the Department of the Arts (2011 - 2013).

The jury panel also includes DOP and film director Mohsen Ahmed; Rahma Montasser, film editor and professor of montage at the Higher Institute of Cinema; Mahmoud El-Lozy, stage director and actor, as well as one of the main founders of the theatre department at the AUC; Hanan Youssef, cinema and theatre actress and one of the founding members of Al-Warsha theatre troupe; and Fawzi El-Awamri, an interior designer who supervised scenery design of numerous films.

The screenings will take place across the halls of the AUC Downtown campus: Legacy Gallery, Oriental Hall, Ewart Memorial Hall, Future Gallery.

The organisers assured the public that all precautionary measures will be taken in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Within this distinct quantitative and qualitative framework of participating films, “Visions” has become the most prominent celebration of Egyptian short films in Cairo.

Brainchild of the AUC’s Cinema Department, the festival sheds light on short films created by young filmmakers, including the AUC’s own students as well as young people from across Egypt.

The festival aims to provide an opportunity for emerging Egyptian filmmakers to display their films within the highly artistic setting.

The festival’s organisers said the event works on developing the audience and creating interest in the works of young and budding filmmakers.
