Two films — 'Cairo: Symphony of a City' and 'Quarantine 2020' — by Egyptian young directors shared the first prize of the Corona in the Lenses of Creators competition.
The competition, organised by the Freedom Centre for Creativity in Alexandria — a body headed by Walid Qanoush, affiliated to the Ministry of Culture's Cultural Development Fund — invited young creators to ponder on the days of the lockdown and its impact on daily life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The requirements of the competition were that the documentary film be shot with digital or mobile cameras and the duration of the film would range from 5 to 30 minutes.
Cairo: Symphony of a City is directed by Mahmoud Salem, while Quarantine 2020 is directed by Sara Haggag, a video editor and photographer.
The jury of the competition also awarded a “special mention” and a certificate of recognition to three other films: ‘Earth is Home’, ‘Black and White in Colour’, and ‘Waiting for the Sunrise’.
The competition's jury included film critics Atef Beshay, Nahed Salah, and screenwriter and director Mohamed Abdel-Khaleq.
