Egyptian screenwriter Mariam Naoum to co-write 'The Alexandria Killings' with Oscar-winning Terry George

The Arabic serial killer series 'The Alexandria Killings' is based on a true story of Raya and Sakina, who robbed and killed many women in 1920's Alexandria

Renowned Egyptian screenwriter Mariam Naoum and Oscar-winning Irish writer-director Terry George will team up to co-write an Arabic serial killer series titled The Alexandria Killings, Naoum revealed the news on her Facebook page Thursday.

The series will focus on the infamous Egyptian sisters Raya and Sakina, who robbed and killed several women in 1920s Alexandria.

The sisters were eventually sentenced to death, yet their story has inspired a series of filmmakers, theatre writers and directors, to shed light on them in their productions.

The Alexandria Killings is being produced by Dubai-based Front Row Filmed Entertainment and London-based Rocket Science via their Middle East joint venture Yalla Yalla. 

The date of the series release is yet to be revealed.

Mariam Naoum is among the most renowned scriptwriters of her generation. Born to an artistic family, she studied economics in France yet returned to Egypt to study screenwriting at the High Institute of Cinema.

Naoum rose to prominence in 2009 with her film One-Zero for which she won Best Script Writer award in Feature category at the Dubai International Film Festival (2009), followed by a number of critically acclaimed television series: A Girl Named Zat (2013) based on Sonallah Ibrahim's celebrated novel titled Zaat, Segn El Nessa (Women's Prison, 2014), Taht Al Saytara (Under the Influence, 2015) and Sunset Oasis (Wahet El-Ghoroob, 2017) based on Bahaa Taher's novel with the same title. 

Her portfolio also includes scripts for series such as Zay El Shams (2019), Why not? (2020), Half Crazies (2021), Take care of Zizi (2021), among others.

Between Two Seas (2019), a drama directed by Anas Tolba brought Naoum a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement in Best Screenplay competition at the Brooklyn Film Festival (2019). She co-wrote the script together with Karim El-Dalil and Amani El-Tunsi.

“At this point of my career, I really believe that merging the experiences of Middle Eastern and Western filmmakers is crucial for the film and TV industry and it will help perfect the adaptation of the story,” Naoum said in an official statement released by the series' producers.

The Alexandria Killings is Naoum's first cooperation with an internationally acclaimed screenwriter and director.

Terry George (Terence George), an Irish screenwriter and director, is known for Hotel Rwanda (2004) which he also directed and In the Name of the Father (1993). He received Oscar nominations for both films in the Best Writing segment.  

George won an Oscar for The Shore (2011), a short comedy drama that he wrote and directed.
