The organisers of the Malmo Arab Film Festival (MAFF) announced that its upcoming 12th edition will take place between 4-8 May 2022. The organisers also revealed that prior to the festival in May, the MAFF will offer numerous activities which aim to shed light on Arab cinema and its current developments.

At the previous 11th edition (April 2021), MAFF adopted a hybrid approach, shifting between physical activities like screenings and in-person meetings taking place across the Swedish city and virtual ones hosted on the internet.

With the COVID-19 vaccine coverage increasing and restrictions being gradually lifted in Sweden, the MAFF's 12th edition will have a fully physical presence, with all activities taking place in cinemas and other locations in Malmo, inviting audience to enjoy themselves in the format that the festival was originally intended to be presented in since its launch over one decade ago.

Prior to the MAFF, the festival will relaunch the MAFF i Skåne project, offering screenings free of charge to schools and public libraries all over Skåne County, located 215 kilometres from Malmo.

During MAFF’s Arabian Nights programme, a selection of films from previous editions will be shown to the Malmö audience. Screenings include Palestinian drama 200 Meters by Ameen Nayfeh, scheduled on 28 August 2021.

Arab Women Film Days and MAFF Turné will be held in October 2021 across numerous Swedish cities, incluuding Malmo, Helsingborg, Luleå, Stockholm and Gothenburg.

The activities will also include Critics Without Borders workshop planned to take place in conjunction with the Arab Women Film Days, which will focus on connecting film critics from the Middle East and the Nordic countries for the exchange of knowledge and ideas.
