The film participated in the Documentary Film Competition.

The one-hour long documentary From Cairo follows “two women who are leading a single life but managing to face their fears and carve a space for their dreams,” the synopsis reveals.

The director uses Cairo as the backdrop of the film, a city that “haunts” her and where she meets the two protagonists — Heba and Aya.

The Malmo festival’s Jury Award is the first important award for From Cairo following its release in 2021.

Prior to its official premiere, the film received a Stadion Video Award from the MedFilm Works in Progress section of the Rome MedFilm Festival

This is the second award scooped up by an Egyptian artist in 12th Malmo Arab Film Festival, with actor Mohamed Mamdouh also winning the Best Actor Award for his role in Abu Saddam.

The Malmö Arab Film Festival’s 12th edition took place from 4 to 9 May in the Swedish city of Malmö.

The festival screened 56 films (31 features and 25 shorts) produced by 14 different Arab countries and co-produced with 10 Western countries.

Other Egyptian films that were featured in the festival included ‘Abu Saddam’ by Nadine Khan, ‘Souad’ by Ayten Amin, ‘Captains of Zaatari’ by Ali El-Arabi, and ‘Khadiga’ by Morad Mostafa.
