Goethe Institute gears for Film Week in Cairo and Alexandria

Cairo and Alexandria Goethe Institutes will hold the Goethe Film Week between 5 and 13 June, with screenings and discussions focusing on today's socio-political issues.

The films in the line-up span a multitude of genres such as commercial, indie, drama, comedy, feature and documentary.

They will include German productions as well as films by Egyptian and Arab directors who have been represented at international and national film festivals over the past two years.

The screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with selected movie directors such as the Egyptian director Khairy Beshara and the Egyptian expert Dr. Iman Ezzedine.

The Goethe Film Week will also include a panel discussion on political correctness and its influence on film, and two workshops in Cairo and Alexandria led by the German-Algerian director Anne Zohra Berrached.

A total of eleven films are being screened, with five of them from female directors, including two 2021 Berlinale winning-films by Maria Speth and Anne Zohra Berrached. The latter filmmaker will be present during the screenings and discussions in Cairo and Alexandria. 

The Goethe Film Week also features the tragicomedy Nö by Dietrich Brüggemann and Le Prince by Lisa Bierwirths – both nominated at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

The Arabic film screenings will feature eight productions from three directors, all of whom have participated in international film festivals; these include Captains of Zaatari by Ali Al-Araby, Maggie Morgan's From Meir, To Meir, Casablanca Beats (Haut et fort) by Nabil Ayouch, Memory Box by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, among other award-winning titles.
