Veteran Egyptian film producer Wagih El-Leithy dies at 78

The multi-award winning Egyptian film producer and distributer Wagih El-Leithy passed away early Saturday at the age of 78.

His funeral ceremony, which was held Saturday afternoon at the Mostafa Mahmoud Mosque in Mohandessin, Giza, was attended by a number of filmmakers and actors.

Many people and entities of cultural note mourned the departure of the experienced filmmaker, including the Egyptian Cinematic Syndicate which praised his career and personality.

With around 60 works; Wagih El-Leithy’s filmography include Afreet Meraty (1968), El-Bahth Aan Fadiha (1973), Tharthara Fawq El-Nil (1971), Miramar (1969), 30 Youm Fel Segn (1966), El-Ataba Gazaz (1969) and many other classic films.

Wagih El-Leithy hailed from the large family of film producers that includes his older brothers Mamdouh El-Leity (also a scriptwriter), Gamal El-Leithy, and Ihab El-Leithy. His nephew Amr El-Leithy is a renowned media presenter.

Wagih El-Leithy was honoured last month as part of the 38th edition of the Alexandria Film Festival for Mediterranean Countries.
