Led by director of cinematography Mahmoud Abdel-Samie, the festival has shortlisted eight films for competitions, screenings and discussions throughout its daily activities.

Each day, the festival will screen a film at 6pm before honouring and hosting some of its makers in a talk afterwards.

The opening ceremony featured evergreen star Hussein Fahmy. the current president of the Cairo International Film Festival.

Fahmy and Khaled Abdel-Gelil, the cinema advisor for the ministry of culture, hosted a ceremony honouring the filmmakers of selected films.

The festival runs through 13 May.
