Director Marwan Hamed's film "Kira Wel-Gin" (Kira & El-Gin) took center stage at the 49th edition of the Film Society Festival for Egyptian Cinema, which announced its awards for the best films of 2022 on Monday.

Kira & El-Gin wins big as Film Society Festival announces awards

Director Marwan Hamed's film Kira wel-Gin (Kira & El-Gin) took centre stage at the 49th edition of the Film Society Festival for Egyptian Cinema, which announced its awards for the best films of 2022 on Monday.

Kira & El-Gen won the awards for best film, best director, the audience award, and excellence award in acting for Karim Abd El-Aziz.

Razan Gamal was recognized as the Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

The film received accolades for its technical achievements, with Tamer Mortada winning the Best Visual Effects award, Nahed Nasrallah receiving the Best Styling award, Bassil Houssam honoured for Best Décor, Hesham Nazih recognized for Best Music Scores, and Ahmad Al-Moursi awarded for Best Photography.

Ahmad Abu Al-Saad received the Best Sound Mixing award for his work in Kira & El-Gen and El-Ankaboot (The Spider), directed by Ahmed Nader Galal.

 

For Zico

Peter Mimi’s Men Agl Zico (For Zico) clinched the best actor and best actress awards for Karim Mahmoud Abdel-Aziz and Menna Shalaby, respectively.

Other notable films included Hady El-Bagory's Lailat Qamar 14 (Full Moon Night), which won Best Editor for Ahmed Hafez and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Khaled Anwar.

The jury presented a special award to Maged El-Kedwany for his role in Sherif Arafa's film The Crime.

The jury panel, chaired by scriptwriter and director Ibrahim Al-Mougi, comprised critics Amal Al-Gamal, Magda Maurice, Walid Seif, director Khaled Al-Aassar, and producer Hesham Soliman.

Top Arab films

The Film Society board unveiled its selection for the top three Arab films screened in Egyptian theatre, out of 14: Jordan’s Daughters of Abdul-Rahman by director Zeid Abu Hamdan; Lebanon’s The Sea Ahead by director Ely Dagher; and Dafatir Maya by directors Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige.

 

Led by director of cinematography Mahmoud Abdel-Samie, the screening and talks of the Film Society Festival’s 49th edition took place at the Cairo Opera House’s Artistic Creativity Centre from 6 to 13 May with the awards ceremony scheduled for 20 May.

The selection process involved voting by association members, including the board of directors, critics, and filmmakers.

This annual event is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture in coordination with the Cultural Development Fund, Cairo Opera House, Cinematic Professions Syndicate, and the National Centre of Cinema.
