Prominent Egyptian TV director Gamil El-Moghazy passes away at 84

Renowned Egyptian TV director Gamil El-Moghazy passed away at the age of 84 on Saturday, as announced by his son, director Gamil Gamil El-Moghazy.

Gamil El-Moghazy was born in 1939 in Kafr El-Sheikh.

Also a producer, he was one of the most prominent directors in Egyptian TV, directing hundreds of hours in various prime time shows especially in the 1970s and 1980s.

Along with the famous anchor Mofeed Fawzy, El-Moghazy interviewed the most iconic celebrities of the time. These included singers Umm Kulthum and Abdel Halim Hafez, to actors Abdel Moneim Madbouly and Fouad El-Mohandes, as well as writers like Ihsan Abdel Quddous and Yusuf Idris, to name but a few.

He adapted well to the streaming era. His Facebook page is followed by almost half a million users, while his YouTube channel has almost 270,000 subscribers and his videos have millions of views.

On Saturday, he was mourned by a number of cultural personalities and entities including the Egyptian Cinema Syndicate, which described him as “an icon in documenting creativity.”

His funeral ceremony is scheduled to be held on Sunday at El-Shorta mosque in the 6th of October City, Greater Cairo.
