Bosnian director Tanović to head jury of Cairo Int'l Film Festival main competition

The Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) names Bosnian director and screenwriter Danis Tanović as president of the Official International Competition at the 45th edition, which will be held from 15 to 25 November 2023.

Tanović, born in 1969 in Zinica in the former Yugoslavia, is one of the most accomplished directors and screenwriters in Eastern Europe.

He is the only director from Bosnia and Herzegovina to win an Academy Award for his film No Man’s Land (2001), which garnered the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002.

No Man’s Land also won Best Screenplay at Cannes in 2001.

He has also directed films such as An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker and Death in Sarajevo, which won the Silver Bear – Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale in 2016. 

The 45th edition of the CIFF will be presided on by renowned Egyptian actor Hussein Fahmy.

The oldest film festival in the Arab world and Africa, the CIFF is also the only Arab and African festival registered in category A of the International Federation of Producers in Prasles, France, FIAPF.
