Ramses was not available for comment to Ahram Online.

The resignation comes shortly after the CIFF was put off. The festival's 45th edition was originally scheduled from 15 to 24 November.

While the official announcement used the term “postponed,” a CIFF representative stated that this effectively amounts to a cancellation due to the lack of available dates at the Opera House complex, where the festival is traditionally held, Screen Daily reported.

The postponement came on 18 October amid escalating tensions in the region as a result of the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip that began on 7 October.

Ramses is among the best-known directors of his generation. Born in 1979 and a graduate of the Higher Institute of Cinema, Ramses has a large score of achievements as a film director.

He was appointed director of the Cairo International Film Festival in its 44th edition in 2022, with actor Hussein Fahmy serving as the festival's president.

Ramses had been the artistic director of El Gouna Film Festival since its launch in 2017; a post he resigned from right before the closing ceremony of the festival’s fifth edition in 2021.
