Film critic Andrew Mohsen on three worth-watching Ramadan series

Ahmed Nassar, Thursday 21 Mar 2024

Film critic Andrew Mohsen has highlighted three TV series that he finds worth watching this year during the holy month of Ramadan: Masar Egbari (Mandatory Path), Ashghal Shaqa (House Duties), and Baba Geh (Dad Is Here).

Ramadan 2024

"It is an average season in general," Mohsen said in exclusive statements to Ahram, describing the television series this Ramadan.

Although there are a few good works, they still cannot match Taht El-Wesaya (Under Guardianship), a 15-episode series screened during Ramadan 2023, starring Mona Zaki, Diab, Nesreen Amin, and Rushdi Al-Shami, he said.

"Taht El-Wesaya was screened in the second half of Ramadan last year; hence maybe we still need to wait for exceptional works this year," Mohsen added.

“One of the good TV series that caught my attention is Masar Egbari (Mandatory Path), which is credited to director Nadine Khan and actors Ahmed Dash and Essam Omar, who were a good duo. I consider this series the best work of this Ramadan season until now,” he continued.

Moreover, Mohsen applauded the "good efforts" exerted by the cast and crew of Ashghal Shaqa (House Duties).

“One of the striking things in this series is that it contains some very good episodes, while others are more or less average. Yet, overall it is a good series, presenting good comedy,” he said.

Khaled Diab directed Ashghal Shaqa, which stars Hesham Maged, Asmaa Galal, Mostafa Ghareib, and Salwa Mohammed Ali.

Then, Mohsen described the idea of Baba Geh (Dad Is Here) series as "remarkable."

However, he highlighted that several episodes of this series "were not as strong as those of Ashghal Shaqa, but it still has what keeps the viewer interested to continue watching.”

Khaled Maraei directed this series, which stars Akram Hosny, Nesrine Amin, and Samaa Ibrahim.

Although Sellet Rahm (Kinship Relationship) tackles a very important idea, and its characters are well written, "its events show some exaggeration," he concluded.

Tamer Nady is the series director. It features Eyad Nassar, Youssra Al-Lozy, and Asmaa Abu El-Yazeed.

A few shorter series are yet to be released as we approach the second half of Ramadan.
