Films from Egypt were among those selected for Critics' Week and the Directors’ Fortnight parallel competitions of this year's 77th Cannes Film Festival, set to be held 14-25 May.

Brink of Dreams (Rafaat Einy El Sama) will be screened within Critics' Week while East of Noon will screen in the Directors’ Fortnight segment.

The documentary, the second feature film directed by Nada Riyadh and Ayman El Amir, follows an all-female, all-Coptic theatre troupe who challenge their traditional backgrounds.

Cannes Critics' Week is a parallel competition for new directors to screen their first or second works. This year, this segment will screen a total of 11 films.

East of Noon, screened within the Directors' Fortnight section, is written and directed by Hala Elkoussy.

Starring Ahmed Kamal, Menha Batraoui, and Omar Rozek, the film follows a musician Abdo, who rebels against his elders, seeking freedom through his art in a confined world outside of time.

The Directors' Fortnight boasts 21 titles that compete for the People’s Choice award.

Cannes Critics’ Week and Directors' Fortnight selections were announced today, following the announcement of the main competition contenders last week
