Aswan Int'l Women Film Festival's winners announced: Egypt in the lead

As the 8th edition of the Aswan International Women Film Festival closed on Thursday, the festival’s awards were announced. Egyptian productions scored numerous awards across different segments of the festival

The festival that run between 20 and 25 April, featured 76 films from more than 36 countries, screened across several competitive segments, in addition to out-of-competition screenings. 

Egypt scored several awards in international competitions. 

Egyptian film Memoirs of M.A. Draz by Maggie Morgan also scooped the Special Jury Award in the Feature Films Competition.

The same film also won the European Union Award for best Euro-Mediterranean film, sharing the award with Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania.

Best Director award in the Short Film Competition went to Somewhere in Between, directed by Dahlia Nemlich, a co-production between Egypt, France and Lebanon. The same segment gave a Special Mention to Chez Gai by Islam Kamal.

Bahega Hafez Award for Best Director:
Sara Summa for Arthur & Dania (Germany)

Latifa El-Zayat Award for Best Screenplay: 
Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania (Tunisia)

Nadia Lotfy Award for Best Actress:
ex-aequo: Bianca Delbravo and Dilvin Asaad for their roles in Paradise Is Burning (Sweden)

Rasheeda Abdelsalam Special Jury Award:
The Memoirs of M.A. Draz by Maggie Morgan (Egypt)



Short Film Competition

Nabeeha Lotfy for Best Short Film:
The Envoy of God by Amina Mamani Abdoulaye (Niger, Burkina Faso, Rwanda)

Atteyat Elabnoudy Award for Best Director:
Dahlia Nemlich for Somewhere in Between (Egypt, France, Lebanon)

Nahed Nasrallah Award, Special Jury Award:
Colorado by Sandra Gallego and Pilar Gómez (Spain)

Chez Gai by Islam Kamal (Egypt)

Euro-Mediterranean Competition

European Union Award for best Euro-Mediterranean film dealing with women’s issues:
ex-aequo: Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania (Jordan, Sweden, Saudi Arabia) and Memoirs of M.A. Draz by Maggie Morgan (Egypt)

Egyptian Tourism Authority Award:
Maqsoom by Kawthar Younis (Egypt)

1st Prize: Scenes from Memory by Mohamed Rabee

The Aswan International Women Film Festival (AIWFF)  is the first and only Egyptian festival dedicated to women's creativity, and the only festival of this size taking place in Aswan.

Tunisia was the country of honour for this year's edition.

The festival also hosted numerous filmmakers from Egypt and the international scene who participated in workshops, seminars and talks.
