The festival’s chairman, director of cinematography Mahmoud Abdel-Samie, highlighted Fahmy’s particular link with the Film Society Festival (FSF), since many of the movies he acted in were screened within the consecutive editions of the festival, winning several awards.

Abdel-Samie noted: “I’ve known Hussein Fahmy for so long on a professional level. Eight of the films he starred in screened in the festival's past editions."

Those films include Enemy Brothers, (1974) in FSF's inaugural edition in 1974. The Sinners (1975) directed by Said Marzouk, screened in the 3rd edition (1976), Mohamed Khan's Dinner Date (1981) followed in the eighth edition, Oh My Homeland (1986) in the 13th, Animal Running (1987) in the 14th, Playing With Adults in the 18th, and Mafia (2002), directed by Sherif Arafa, screened in the 29th edition of FSF.

Samie added that Fahmy won the Best Actor Award for his role in The Shame (1982) in the FSF's ninth edition in 1983.

Samie also explained that honouring the actor is especially important this year since it will take place during the event's golden jubilee, marking half a century of the festival's presence in Egyptian cinema.

The career of Hussein Fahmy spans over 60 years. He has starred and directed in over two hundred films, TV series, plays, and radio works.

He has worked in film with distinguished Egyptian directors such as Youssef Chahine, Kamal El-Sheikh, Henry Barakat and Mohamed Khan.

Since 2022, he has served as president of the Cairo International Film Festival, a position he also held between 1998 and 2001.

Fahmy has received many honours from local and international festivals.

In 2022, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Luxor African Film Festival at its 11th edition.

In 2023, Malmö Arab Film Festival (MAFF) in Sweden paid him a tribute with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

One of the oldest cinematic celebrations in Egypt, the Film Society Festival is held annually under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Cultural Development Fund, Cairo Opera House, Cinematic Professions Syndicate, and National Center of Cinema.
