The presentation of Hanouma is the festival management's attempt "to think outside the box," read the note accompanying the poster released today on social media.
With this poster, the Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival (AMCFF) references the fourth film on the list of 100 best 100 Egyptian films as enumerated by the Cairo International Film Festival poll held in 1996.
Starring Farid Shawqi and Hind Rostom, Cairo Station (Bab El-Hadid) competed for the Golden Bear at the 8th Berlin International Film Festival (1958), and was the Egyptian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 31st Academy Awards (1959), but was not nominated.
The portrayal of Hanouma on the AMCFF's poster is an artwork created by the visual artist Reza Khalil, who presented her seated at the back of a train car next to a bucket of water.
One of the oldest film festivals in Egypt, the AMCFF is an annual event organised by the Egyptian Association for Film Writers and Critics, under the auspices of the ministries of culture, information, and tourism, and focuses on the cultural riches of the Mediterranean Basin.
