The latest postponement is due to logistical aspects, according to the film's producer Ahmed El-Sobki.
The Atheist, a screenplay by journalist Ibrahim Eissa and directed by Mohamed El-Adl, has caused a series of controversies since the release of its trailer at the end of July.
The film’s plot follows Yahia (Ahmed Hatem), a son of an extremist Sheikh. Yahia begins doubting his faith, eventually turning into an atheist, angering his father and other religious fanatics.
Many social media users expressed their disappointment at the film’s topic, some calling for boycotting it.
The known Egyptian lawyer Mortada Mansour filed a lawsuit against the production company demanding the withdrawal of the film, based on its alleged attempt to undermine the Islamic religion’s foundations.
Talking to Ahram Online, the novelist and scriptwriter defended the film, arguing that its topic reflects some social strata in Egypt.
Not only is atheism present in Egyptian society, but the phenomenon is often openly discussed,” Eissa commented.
“Whether it is on the rise or not, that’s something we can debate, yet its sheer presence cannot be denied. We read about atheism on social media and numerous Arabic language websites,” he added.
Insisting that atheism cannot be swept under the carpet, Eissa encourages open discussion, which is one of the ways to create changes. He also gives an example of Mostafa Mahmoud (2021-2015), late scholar and writer, whose journey from doubt to faith has created strong polemics over the decades of his life.
“Undeniably, the reality around us can push some people to atheism, or at least to doubting the religion,” Eissa said, pointing to social and economic challenges that people in Egypt and internationally are subjected to. “All those issues are discussed inside the film,” he clarified.
The film was also defended by its cast and crew.
Ahmed Hatem, the protagonist, invited the audience to watch the film before passing judgment.
Producer Ahmed El-Sobky claimed on his Facebook page that the film was approved by Al-Azhar and its content does not include anything that would contradict Islam.
Shereen Reda, who also stars in the film, said on her Facebook page that "the film conveys important awareness messages for the younger generation regarding atheism, a concept that is approached based on a frequent misunderstanding of the religion.”
The Atheist also stars Mahmoud Hemida and Hussein Fahmy. The film's score is composed by Rageh Daoud.
