The film follows the story of an all-female Coptic group that formed a theatre troupe to perform plays inspired by Upper Egyptian folklore in their small village.
The troupe aims to raise awareness about important issues, like early marriage, domestic violence, and girls' education.
The film stars Majda Masoud, Haidi Sameh, Monika Youssef, Marina Samir, Myriam Nassar, Lydia Haroun, and Youstina Samir.
In 2024, The Brink of Dreams won the Golden Eye Documentary Prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Egypt at MAFF
Egyptian star Ahmed Helmy was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the MAFF opening ceremony.
He also gave a masterclass as part of the festival events.
In addition, Karim El-Shennawy's The Tale of Daye’s Family was also in the Feature Film Competition, with Egyptian filmmaker Hala Khalil serving as a jury member.
Moreover, two Egyptian films, Abu Judy (Adel Ahmed Yehia) and the Egyptian-Syrian production Loss (Rami Al-Kassab), competed in the short film competition.
Egyptian film producer Sherin Magdy Mohamed was a jury member of the competition.
The festival's closing ceremony, which revealed the winning films, took place at the Royal Cinema in Malmö on Sunday evening.
The MAFF opened with Rashid Masharawi's film Passing Dreams (Palestine) and closed with Taghrid Abouelhassan's film Snow White (Egypt).
Since 2011, the MAFF has become one of the leading and most prominent film festivals dedicated to Arab cinema outside the Arab world.
