Remembering Mostafa Fahmy: One year since passing of Egyptian screen star

Veteran Egyptian actor Mostafa Fahmy passed away on 30 October 2024, leaving behind a rich legacy of films and television works that spanned over four decades.

Born on 7 August 1942, Fahmy graduated from the Higher Institute of Cinema and devoted his life to acting. Renowned for his versatility and emotional depth, he portrayed a wide range of complex characters in both cinema and television.

Throughout his career, Fahmy appeared in more than 45 films and nearly 100 television series.

He began his artistic journey as an assistant photographer on Amira Hobi Ana (1974) before launching his acting career that same year in Atef Salem’s Where Is My Mind? starring Soad Hosni, Roshdi Abaza, and Mahmoud Yassin.

Fahmy went on to work with numerous Egyptian directors, appearing in Hassan El-Emam’s Qamar Al-Zaman (1976) and The Girl Who Said No (1978), as well as Ashraf Fahmy’s Five-Star Thieves (1994) alongside Salah Zulfikar, and Inas El-Degheidy’s The Red Rose (2000) with Youssra and Ahmed Ramzy.

He also starred in film adaptations of literary works, including Ayoub (1983) by Naguib Mahfouz, directed by Hany Lasheen, and Days in Halal (1985), based on Ihsan Abdel-Quddous’s novel and directed by Hussein Kamal.

On television, Fahmy took on leading roles in popular series such as The Hotel (1980), A Place in the Heart (1988), Private Secrets (1997), Wandering Hearts (2006), and Yesterday’s Story (2008).

He shared the screen with some of Egypt’s most celebrated actresses, including Shweikar, Naglaa Fathy, Madiha Kamel, and Elham Shahin.

In 2024, Fahmy appeared in his final cinematic works, Ahl El Kahf (The Cave People) and Aserb (The Squadron).

He is the younger brother of actor Hussein Fahmy, the acclaimed Egyptian star and current president of the Cairo International Film Festival since 2022.
