In the weeks leading up to his death, El-Tagy had undergone spinal surgery amid declining health.
Born in 1954, El-Tagy came from a family deeply involved in Egypt’s performing arts. His grandfather, prominent actor Abdel Warith Assar, had a significant influence on his career. As a child, El-Tagy recalled reading scripts and other works to him, an experience that helped steer him towards acting.
His first screen appearances came in television drama series such as Al-Hariban (The Two Fugitives, 1976) and Bint El-Ayam (Daughter of Time, 1977).
He gained attention for his role as Rashad Al Fawwal in the series Al-Bashayer (The Good Omen, 1987), followed by appearances in Layali El-Helmeya (The Helmiya Nights, 1987), Al-Mal Wal Banoun (Money and Children, 1992) and Zizinia (1997).
He continued to appear in numerous television productions, including Al-Esyan (The Rebellion, 2002), Yetraba Fe Ezzo (Raised in Wealth, 2007), Abu Dahka Genan – Seeret Ismail Yassin (Abu Dahka Genan – The Story of Ismail Yassin, 2009), Selssal El-Dam (Blood Ties, 2013), Gabal El-Hilal (The Crescent Mountain, 2014), Younis Weld Fadda (Younis, Son of Fadda, 2016), Wilad Tes'a (Nine Children, 2017), Valentino (Valentino, 2020), Molouk El-Gad'ana (Kings of Chivalry, 2021) and Le'bet Newton (Newton’s Cradle, 2021).
El-Tagy also participated in a number of films, including Al-Motarad (The Pursued, 1985) and Afreet El Nahar (The Day Demon, 1997).
On stage, his early career featured appearances in iconic heritage-focused theatrical works, including El-Motazawegoun (The Married Couples), Akhoya Hayyes Wana Layyes (My Brother Is Having a Blast, While I’m Struggling) and Abu Zeid El-Helaly Salama (Abu Zaid El-Helaly Salama), all staged in 1978.
His most recent television appearance was in the series Baba Wa Mama Giran (Dad and Mom Are Neighbors), which aired during Ramadan in 2026.
Following news of his death, fellow actors and figures from Egypt’s artistic community paid tribute to El-Tagy, remembering his career and contributions to the performing arts.
The National Cinema Center, headed by Ahmed Saleh, described El-Tagy as a distinguished artist who left a clear mark on Egyptian drama and cinema through a career rich in works that resonated with audiences.
Father Boutros Daniel, head of the Egyptian Catholic Centre for Cinema, also remembered El-Tagy as a “wonderful, cultured and cheerful” artist, expressing his sorrow at the loss of a distinguished figure from Egypt’s artistic and cultural community.
Actor Tarek Lotfy shared a photo of El-Tagy on Facebook, writing: “May God have mercy on you and forgive you. Goodbye, kindest of people.”
His funeral is scheduled for today at Al Thawra Mosque in Heliopolis.
