PROGRAMME & TRAILERS: Films on how music changed lives

Faculty of Music Education in Cairo will screen 4 documentaries showcasing how large music projects have changed and enriched the lives of people in Venezuela, Congo, Germany and South Africa

"Music - Together We Uplift" is an initiative conducted by the Faculty of Music Education in Zamalek, Cairo. Four films showcasing music projects in Venezuela, South Africa, Germany and Congo will be screened on four consecutive days between 23 - 26 June.

The films will look into music as tool for development that can enrich lives of millions of people, impacting healthy social transformation through culture that highlights values and fun.

"The selected movies make visible the huge potential of music with regard to social development and transformation and hopefully inspire you, too, to envision and develop your own music-related project ideas," states their promotional materials.

Sunday 23 June

El Sistema, Venezuela (2008)

A story of child youth orchestras and how this grand national project impacted the lives of over 250,000 Venezuelan children from impoverished areas.

Monday 24 June

Soweto Strings, South Africa (2008)

A documentary that focuses on a British viola player's adventure in Soweto, where she helps poor children and youth deal with life's hardships through music education as they learn to play Bach, Mozart, Bartok and music by other composers.

Tuesday 25 June

Rhythm is it! , Germany (2004)

The film talks about a large music educational project of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle. An initiative that began with 250 members has grown and infused new life into the young minds.

Wednesday 26 June

Kinshasa Symphony, Democratic Republic of the Congo (2010)

A film about a music project that incorporated over 200 amateur musicians from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country torn by political and economical hardships and whose inhabitants are classified as the poorest in the world.

 

All films will be screened in the Faculty of Music Education in Zamalek, starting at 11am (until 2pm)
