Art Alert: El-Leila El-Kebira at the German University

On Saturday 10 May, the German University in Cairo music ensemble, conducted by Shady Abdel-Salam, will perform the Egyptian operetta

The German University in Cairo's music ensemble and choir will perform the well-known Egyptian operetta El-Leila El-Kebira by Sayed Mekawy, with lyrics by Salah Jahin, at the university premises on Saturday 10 May.

El-Leila El-Kebira was especially arranged for the GUC by Khaled El-Kammer and Mina Samy.

The performance will include the university choir, consisting of over 30 singers, while the GUC ensemble will be joined by several professional musicians from outside the campus including a cellist, trumpet player and double bass player.

The GUC music ensemble perform regular concerts and in recent years have developed a vibrant repertoire that incorporates classical music, works from Broadway musicals, jazz composition, as well as Arabic music.

The group consists of amateur musicians who pursue their music passion under the supervision of Ohoude Khadr, who joined the university in 2012. Currently the ensemble is conducted by Shady Abdel-Salam, who also works with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Chamber Orchestra.
