Yet another music weekend awaits Cairo audiences at El-Genaina Theatre

Hawidro and Wust El-Balad
Hawidro and Wust El-Balad bands will deliver concerts on 12 and 13 November, respectively, at El-Genaina Theatre.

Egyptian bands Hawidro and Wust El-Balad are scheduled to deliver concerts on 12 and 13 November, respectively, at Al-Azhar Park's El-Genaina Theatre.

Hawidro is an eight-member band founded in 2014, and which presents Afro-Egyptian tunes. The band’s lineup includes Ahmed Abayazeid (vocals), Bahir Gamal (keyboard/composer), Hussein Gamal (electric guitar), Ahmed Nazmi (bass guitar/producer), Ahmed Ramzy (percussion), Ihab Abd Alhamed (percussion) and Shams Salem (drums/percussion).

'Hawidro' is a Nubian word which means “the return,” which as the band describes on their official Facebook page “has become the philosophy of what we do — we wanted the return of our heritage, particularly our African side that has long been left behind. We’d all probably agree that there isn’t really a genre out there that describes what we do. But, if we had to choose two words that portray our music, it’s Afro-Egyptian — unique, boundless, and encompassing everything different and creative about where we live.”

As for Wust El-Balad, this renowned band was founded in 1999 and is considered one of the most popular bands in the Egyptian contemporary music scene.

The band originally operated under the name The Gray Rat Band and changed it to Wust El-Balad on the suggestion of Sameh El-Azab, who they jammed with at the Cairo Opera House.

Wust El-Balad’s lineup comprises Adham El-Saeid, Hany Adel, Ahmed Omran, Ahmed Omar, Asaad Nessim, Ehab Abdel Hameed and Mohammed Gamal Al-Din.
