Art Alert: Djmawi Africa bring vibrant fusion to Cairo’s El-Genaina Theatre

El-Genaina's April series continues with a concert by Algerian band Djmawi Africa

Algerian band Djmawi Africa is scheduled to give a concert at Cairo’s El-Genaina Theatre 23 April as part of the theatre’s April music programme.

Formed in 2004, the eight-member band presents a vibrant fusion of chaabi, rock, metal, reggae and gnawa music.

The band line-up comprises Issem Bosli (lead vocalist/guitar/gumbri), Fethi Nadjem (violin, mandole, kora), Zohier Benlarbi (percussion), Nazim Ziad (drums), Karim Kouadria (bass guitar), Abdou El-Ksouri (lead guitar), Amine Lamari (trumpet, percussion) and Mohamed Shihadah (clarinet, saxophone).

The band's debut performance was at a student concert. They quickly garnered fame, taking part in international festivals like the Ouagadougou Jazz Festival, Tribute to Africa Festival and the 11th Arab World Festival of Montreal.

Their debut album Mama was released in 2008. According to the event description on Facebook, the band followed the album release with a tour in Algeria which was documented and later released on a DVD titled Echfaa.

In 2013, the band released their most recent album titled Avancez l'arrière.
