Art Alert: Choral performance at Cairo's German Protestant Church

The Cairo Choral Society and soloists will perform Vivaldi's Gloria and Durante Magnificat

The Cairo Choral Society, conducted by music director John Baboukis, will peform Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria and Francesco Durante Magnificat in the German Protestant Church on Wednesday, 11 May. 

The soloists of the evening are soprano Amira Reda and mezzo soprano Nathalie Mikhail. The two singers will be accompanied by Elena Grechenko on piano.

The Cairo Choral Society was established in 1983 by Larry P. Catlin with the purpose of understanding great choral works through performance. 

The choir operates under the umbrella of the American University in Cairo (AUC) and its Performing and Visual Arts Department. John Baboukis, the music director and conductor of the choir, is also an associate professor and chair of the Arts Department at the AUC.

The choir's repertoire includes Brahms' Ein Deutches Requiem, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Faure's Requiem, Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Mozart's Coronation Mass, Schubert's Stabat Mater, Dvorak's Mass in D, as well as works by Kodaly, Britten, Williams, Beethoven, Rossini, Handel, Puccini among others.

The choir regularly performs well known classical works in venues such as the All Saint's Cathedral and the American University in Cairo.
