Musicians to hold concerts in solidarity with Coptic victims

Musicians in Cairo and Alexandria are expressing their solidarity with the victims of the New Year's Eve church bombing in Alexandria

Bands and musicians featured in the awards-winning film Microphone will be holding two concerts in Cairo and Alexandria.The concerts come as part of a statement that condemns acts of violence committed in the name of religion. The proceeds of the concert will go towards helping the families of the victims.

The venues of the concerts are yet to be announced with the concerts expected to take place in the coming week. Both concerts are expected to attract a total of around 5000 people.

Families, neighbours and friends of the cast and crew members were among the victims of the blast.

The Egyptian rai band Sahra were meant to perform on 7 January at the Alexandria library but cancelled the concert as a mark of respect for the victims.

The Alexandria Opera House also cancelled its annual concert celebrating the New Years eve.

A silent protest will be organized by El Sawy Culturewheel. Workers, musicians and audience members will gather on 6 January at 6 pm and will walk to the Marashly and the Gameea El Kadeseen churches to stand in front of them.
