Jordanian Palestinian singer-musician Hani Mitwasi opens year 2022 with a new music video, Jerusalem Speaks, released on 7 January on YouTube.

Jerusalem Speaks

In his new single Hani Mitwasi tackles the importance of standing up for what one believes in, with lyrics taking us through issues such as mental health and its role in creating a strong voice on crucial world matters.

Jerusalem Speaks is a rousing anthem that blends angry, almost rock drums with powerful Middle Eastern melodies and deep sound of a choir. Written during the height of lockdown, the single is an “anthem for a new age,” according to Mitwasi.

“It is a call of intellectual revolution and peace. It is about empowerment, determination and standing up for what is right. I believe this is the only way we can free the world from injustice and corruption," the singer and songwriter comments in the press release.

"The song backs the new generation’s line of free thought, strength and determination that cannot be deterred by fear and the belief that the voice of truth is louder and stronger than any power or violence."

Born 1983 in Kuwait City, Mitwasi is Palestinian in origin. He received his BA in music science at the Jordan Academy of Music in 2005, in addition to five years spent studying the flamenco guitar. His fusion between Arabic and Spanish music led him towards creating his own distinguished Franco-Arab style, which resonate in his first two albums Khamrat Al Hob (2006) and Sebooni Ya Nas (2007).

His career includes numerous collaborations such as one with the Grammy-award winning producer Quincy Jones.

Since 2013, Mitwasi has performed in front of over 100,000 people across dozens of countries including Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, Dubai, Switzerland, Spain, Qatar and the US, while his music has been streamed over 50 million times.

He is known for crossing genres and styles; his recent music has taken a socio-political focus, tackling themes of identity, oppression and intellectual revolution with an anthemic sound that borrows from indie rock and traditional Arabic melodies. The first in a series of songs – Esmy Elazzabi – has reached nearly 7 million streams on YouTube alone, since its release in 2017.

He was also a TV judge on talent show Jordan Star.

Jerusalem Speaks was produced and written by Hani Mitwasi with sound engineering mixing and mastering by Haitham Rashad. The music video director and editor is Saif Al-Kiswani
