Rap still dominating Spotify charts in Egypt as Wegz keeps summer lead

Rap is still proving to be the favourite choice for Egyptian users on the Swedish audio streaming platform Spotify, with Wegz topping the summer streams.

Spotify has unveiled Wegz’s El Bakht, the romantic heartbreak tune released in February, as 2022's song of the summer. 

Moreover, Wegz’s earlier hit B3ouda Ya Bilady was listed as Egypt's fourth most streamed song.

Fellow rapper Marwan Moussa made it to second and third place with Aloomek and Batal 3alam, respectively. Spotify described his success as “a huge splash this season.”

Brrr Brrr Brrr, the rap collaboration of Abu El Anwar, Marwan Pablo and Lil Baba, took fifth place.

"The sound of the youth is being heard in every corner throughout the summer, we are very pleased to see Egyptian rap continuing to grow and become the soundtrack of the summer," said Spotify's Head of Music for the MENA Region Mark Abou Jaoude on Wednesday.

Rap continued to dominate the world's leading streaming platform in Egypt, indicating most users in Egypt are youth, who constitute the genre's main fanbase.

In addition to rap and its related genre Mahraganat, the summer season was full of releases from pop stars that gained significant attention on various platforms.

Mohamed Mounir, Assala, Hamaki, Tamer Hosni, Ahmed Saad, Mahmoud El Esseily and Elissa are among the top stars on other platforms like YouTube and Anghami; perennial pop favourite Amr Diab is exclusively available on the latter.

During the past six months, Wegz’s El Bakht has been streamed globally over 13 million times on Spotify, while the same song has gained over 132 million views on YouTube and 37 millions plays on Anghami.

The followoing are two examples of pop summmer hits proved popular on other platforms; Ahmed Saad’s Aleky Eyoun gained over 150 million YouTube listens, while Amr Diab's Enta Al-Haz was streamed over 20 million times on Anghami
