The film stars John Malkovich and Thomas Jane.

Egypt as a Mixtape

NVIC - Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo: 1, Dr. Mahmoud Azmi Street, Zamalek

Andrew Simon, a historian of media, popular culture, and the modern Middle East, will give a lecture titled Egypt as a Mixtape: Ahmad Adawiya, Shaykh Imam, and the Politics of Popular Culture. 

The talk will examine Egypt's "vulgar soundscape" including Ahmad Adawiya, a pioneer of shaabi music; and Shaykh Imam, the blind performer and political dissident. In placing Adawiya and Imam into conversation with one another, Simon will elucidate the extraordinary impact of an ordinary technology and dive into the politics of popular culture.

Baafer Project

The Baafer project was founded by the Egyptian singer Yassen Mahgoub, whose music combines different genres such as electronic music, house, rock, oriental, hip hop and African pop to blur the borders of common music categories. 

The Baafer Project’s line-up features Yassen Mahgoub (vocals), Nadim El-Habashy (guitar), Sami Blakey (trumpet), alongside Mina Adel, Dalia Ibrahim and Daniel Sedhom.

The concert is part of Goethe-Institut’s Shubbak El-Fann programme.

Tango Night with Flute & Bow
Thursday 15 June, 8.30pm
Cairo Opera House, small hall, Zamalek

Flute & Bow is an ensemble led by an award-winning flutist Rania Omar. The ensemble plays tango and other works from their dance music repertoire. The compositions range between Western works and the well known tangos by Arabic composers as transposed on the Western flute accompanied by strings and percussion.

Hany Shenouda
Friday 16 June, 8pm
The Marque, Cairo Festival City, New Cairo

Shenouda, who recently turned 80, has revolutionized Egyptian pop music during his six-decade career and has won numerous awards.

For his upcoming concert, Shenouda has promised a range of surprises, including appearances from indie stars Dina El-Wedidi and Nouran Abutaleb, as well as renowned singer and actress Simone.

Swan Lake

Swan Lake is one of the most beloved ballet works of all times, and one of the Tchaikovsky’s signature compositions

The first performance of Swan Lake by the Cairo Ballet Company took place back in 1991. Since then, the ballet was re-performed several times. 

Swan Lake is performed by the Cairo Opera Ballet Company and the Cairo Opera Orchestra conducted by Nayer Nagui.
