Egypt's culture ministry organizes activities on Sayed Darwish's death centenary

Egypt's Ministry of Culture is organizing a series of events to mark the centenary of the passing of the people's artist Sayed Darwish.

The singer, composer, and "father of Egyptian popular music" was born on 17 March 1892 and passed away on 10 September 1923.

The ministry will hold its celebrations on the many stages operating under its wings. It will present film screenings, a theatre play, talks, as well as music ensembles performing Sayed Darwish's compositions.

The preliminary programme of events is as follows:

Sayed Darwish Theatre, Academy of Arts, 8-10 September
Theatre play titled Sayed Darwish, directed by Khaled Galal.
The play presents the life of the musician.

Supreme Council of Culture (Cairo Opera grounds) 12 September
Launch of an exhibition of books and other printed material about Sayed Darwish.
The exhibition is organized by the National Library and Archives.

Musician Hani Shenouda's talk about Sayed Darwish
Screening of a film about the musician.

Supreme Council of Culture (Cairo Opera grounds) 14 September
Screening of a film about Sayed Darwish and a discussion about the composer.

House of Arabic Singing at Prince Bashtak Palace, 14 September
Concert by Hani Adel Ibrahim and his ensemble.

Alexandria Opera House, 16 September
Concert by Children and Youth Choir Class of the Talent Development Centre.

Damanhour Opera House, 17 September
A concert by Damanhour Opera's Talents Development Centre.

Cairo Opera House's main hall, 17 September
Concert by the Arab Music Ensemble for Heritage.

Al-Ghoury Dome, 18 September
An evening with Sayed Darwish's music, details to be revealed in the coming days.
