Ahram Online highlights a selection of do-not-miss events this week (20-26 March 2024) in Cairo.

Ramadan Zaman w Zaman - performance
Wednesday 20 March, 9 pm
AUC Tahrir Square, Ewart Hall

Directed by Saeed Kabeel, this interactive interdisciplinary performance takes viewers to the past, the period between 1970 and 2020. It brings back well-known Ramadan stories by Ahmed Abd-Elgawad and Alaa Helmy and artistic works from TV, Radio, and real life.

The show also includes storytelling and curated videos from Ramadan Fawazeer, TV series, commercials, and other material. The performance ends with a mesaharaty.

Carmen - opera
Thursday 21 and Friday 22 March, 8 pm
Cairo Opera House, Main Hall, Cairo

Bizet’s opera Carmen will be presented by the Cairo Opera Company, accompanied by the Cairo Opera orchestra and choir conducted by Nader Abbassi, and the Cairo Opera Ballet Company. The opera’s director is Hazem Tayel. 

Wael El-Fashny - music
Thursday 21 March, 9.30 pm
Cairo Opera House

El-Fashny is known for his improvisational performances of mawal, a Middle Eastern form of vocal music. El-Fashny established his profile through collaborations with singers and bands such as Mohamed Tharwat, Mahmoud El-Tohamy, Ihab Yunis, Mohamed Saad, Cairokee, and Basata, among many others. He has since made a name for himself as a leading performer in numerous shows.

Looperia Project - music
Friday 22 March, 9 pm
Amir Taz Palace, Seyoufia Street off Saliba Street, Khalifa District roughly between the Sultan Hassan and the Ibn Tulun mosques. Old Cairo

Looperia brings sounds from the depths of Africa, mixed with oriental tunes. It is a journey through a Sufi atmosphere, African flavor with spiritual lyrics, Gnawa sensibility, and beats. The result expresses the band’s thoughts toward God, love, peace, and mother Africa.

Manal Mohie Eldin - music
Saturday 23 March, 9 pm
Theatro Arkan, Sheikh Zayed City, Cairo outskirts

Dubbed Oriental Strokes, the evening will feature the renowned Egyptian harp player Manal Mohie Eldin and her band. The ensemble will take the listeners on a journey of known oriental compositions.



Dina El-Wedidi - music
Saturday 23 March, 9:30 pm
Cairo Opera House

El-Wedidi’s style of music is deeply rooted in Egypt and Africa, as she touches on many often contrasting cultures. She also incorporates electronic sounds into her music.

Saad El-Oud - music
Monday 25 March, 9 pm
Room Art Space - New Cairo

Saad El-Oud plays songs representing authentic Egyptian heritage while interacting with the audience.

Egyptian Mavlavie - performance
Tuesday 26 March, 9 pm

The soulful Sufi group will perform their acclaimed songs and dances.
