Ahram Online highlights a selection of do-not-miss events this week 7-14 May in Cairo

Cairo Photo Week
 

6–16 May – Cairo Design District, New Cairo
8–18 May – Various venues across Downtown Cairo

The 11-day programme, curated by Photopia photography school, launches its fourth edition with the theme Finding the View.

Cairo Photo Week will feature 26 collective and solo exhibitions with over 150 exhibitors. Around 70 talks, 25 masterclasses and workshops, and over 25 discussion panels will take place across different venues.

Additionally, there will be several artist talks, photowalks, art tours, live demos, book discussions, and portfolio reviews.

New films across cinemas
 

Wednesday 7, Thursday 8, Friday 9, and Saturday 10 May bring several new releases to theatres across Egypt:

  • Heart Eyes, starring Alex Walker, Lauren O'Hara, and Latham Gaines.

  • Rosario, starring David Dastmalchian and Emeraude Toubia.

  • Sneaks, starring Martin Lawrence, Keith David, and Laurence Fishburne.

  • Fox & Hare, starring Teresa Gallagher, Sarah Madigan, and Jamie Quinn.

  • Final Destination: Bloodlines, starring Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, and Richard Harmon.

  • Pink Floyd at Pompeii – the 1972 film, remastered in 4K.

Ramy Sabry – Music

Madinaty Golf Club, Madinaty, Cairo

Sabry rose to fame in the mid-2000s and has since released eight albums and one EP.

His songs garner millions of views, reflecting his ongoing creative output in Egypt and the Arab region.

He regularly performs in Gulf countries, including the UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, and frequently appears in regional music festivals.

 

Medhat Saleh – Music

Must Theatre, 6th of October, Cairo

One of Egypt's most popular singers, Saleh has a wide repertoire of hits, including Kawkab Tany (Another Planet), Wala Teswa Domoe (Not Worth the Tears), and El-Donia Alemetny (Life Taught Me), as well as numerous film scores such as Mafia, El-Beliatsho (The Clown), and Amir El-Zalam (Prince of Darkness).

He has released many albums and starred in several films, television series, and stage plays.

 

Marwan Moussa and Naïka – Music

Moussa, 29, is a well-known Egyptian rapper who rose to prominence in the 2020s. Though active since 2010, his breakthrough came with the 2020 hit Sheraton.

His album Florida became one of Spotify’s most streamed Egyptian albums, with the track Tesla amassing over 38 million views on YouTube.

Moussa’s music blends modern hip-hop with mahraganat and shaabi influences.

French-Haitian pop artist Naïka, 27, will perform in Egypt for the first time.

She gained attention with her 2017 debut Ride and achieved widespread recognition with Sauce in 2021.

Naïka has released three EPs and 20 singles, singing in English, French, and Haitian Creole.

Her sound fuses French, African, and Caribbean influences, blending pop, soul, and R&B.

 

Omar Khairat – Music

Omar Khairat will perform with a full orchestra and choir, conducted by maestro Nayer Nagui.

Born in 1947, Khairat is one of the Arab world’s most celebrated musicians, with hundreds of compositions to his name.

His work includes scores for films and TV series such as The Sixth Day (1984), The Terrorist (1993), Mafia (2002), Girl’s Love (2003), The Embassy in the Building (2005), and Deer’s Blood (2006).

Khairat’s concerts across Egypt and the Arab world regularly sell out weeks in advance, with audiences often singing and humming along to beloved themes like Heya Di El-Hayah, Fi Hawid El Leil, Arabian Rhapsody, Fiha Haga Helwa, Eadam Mayet, El-Khawaga Abdel-Kader, Giran El-Hana, Saber, Arfa, Qadeyet Am Ahmed, Khali Balak Men Aklak, and more.

 

Tablet El-Sitt – Music

Founded in 2019 by folk music student and enthusiast Soha Mohamed, this all-female group is reviving Egypt’s musical heritage.

Tablet El-Sitt has gained widespread recognition, performing at numerous venues across Egypt.

 

Cairo Symphony Orchestra
Saturday 10 May, 10:00 PM
Cairo Opera House, Main Hall, Zamalek, Cairo

The evening will feature L'Arlésienne, incidental music composed by Georges Bizet for Alphonse Daudet’s play of the same name (The Girl from Arles), first performed in Paris in 1872.

The concert will include the A Cappella Choir and be conducted by Nader Abbassi.

 

Ahmed Hany Jazz Fusion Trio – Music
Saturday 10 May, 8:00 PM
Room Art Space & Café, 10 Etehad Al Mohamin St., Garden City

Ahmed Hany is a self-taught bass player, composer, and educator based between Egypt and Turkey. He has performed in over 25 countries through concerts, TV shows, and workshops.

His career includes collaborations with Arabic pop artists such as Hisham Abbas and Angham.

Alongside Arsan Ezzat (piano) and Ayman Mabrouk (percussion), the trio will perform Hany’s compositions and selected jazz standards with his unique arrangements.

 

Ritmo Band – Music
Tuesday 13 May, 9:00 PM
Room Art Space, Spot Mall, New Cairo

Ritmo is a five-member all-female band featuring:

  • Myrna Shalaby (vocals)

  • Nashwa Mohamed (keyboard)

  • Nour Ahmed (guitar)

  • Mimi Ayad (drums)

  • Arwa Gamal (tabla)

Their performances span Oriental music, English and French classics, Lebanese dabkeh, rai, and Gulf styles.
