Tamino’s homecoming: Belgian-Egyptian artist to perform in Cairo

Amina Metwaly-Gabr, Tuesday 16 Sep 2025

The Main Garden of the Cairo International Convention Centre will host a concert by Tamino, a renowed Belgian-Egyptian singer-songwriter, on 3 October.

Tamino

The concert is part of Tamino's "Every Dawn’s a Mountain" tour, which runs from 7 September to 16 November and includes stops in several European countries, Egypt, and Mexico.

Tamino first performed in Cairo in 2019 at Cairo Jazz Club 610 before an audience of about 700 fans. He described that night as “a dream come true” and “a homecoming,” thanking his Egyptian fans for their warm welcome.

In 2023, he played two shows at the American University in Cairo’s Tahrir Campus, attracting a combined audience of 6,000. Egyptian fans and media praised his ability to connect with listeners through "shared cultural roots and his introspective style."

Most recently, in May 2025, Tamino performed at Cinema Radio as part of Mustafa the Poet’s intimate show alongside Rex Orange County and Daniel Caesar.

The show was a series of thought-provoking conversations between the four artists as they explored themes of creativity, identity, cultural representation, and responsibility towards one’s community.

The conversation between the artists on stage aimed to create an intimate exchange within the community, topped with each artist playing songs from their discography.

Tamino's music

Tamino (Tamino-Amir Moharram Fouad) blends indie rock with Arabic musical influences, describing his work as a mix of Western alternative music and the Arabic sounds of his heritage. “It feels like an honest representation of who I am,” he has said.

His first single, Habibi, featured Arabic modal structures and oud accompaniment, an instrument Tamino often plays.

His 2018 debut album, Amir, featured Nagham Zikrayat, a group of musicians from Arab origins based in Belgium, and used traditional Arabic instruments such as the oud and qanun.

The album also included a collaboration with Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood on the song Indigo Night.

In 2022, Tamino released Sahar, a more introspective album with rich Arabic instrumentation.

From this album, the song First Disciple was written on the oud and blends indie music with traditional Arabic tonal colours, highlighting his dedication to his musical influences.

Every Dawn’s a Mountain: Sanctuary

Tamino’s latest album, Every Dawn’s a Mountain (2025), is his most ambitious project to date, featuring 10 tracks.

Most of the album tracks — opening song My Heroine, followed by Babylon, Sanpaku, Willow, Dissolve, among others — are solo performances in which the musician offers calm, lyrically driven works throughout, as he reflects on loss, release, and transformation.

His song Sanctuary, is the sole track that includes a collaboration with Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mitski. Tamino was also the opening act for Mitsiki's tour for her album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We.

Sanctuary blends Tamino's deep vocal tone with Mitski’s lighter delivery, resulting in a subtle yet emotionally powerful conversation between their voices.

Tamino explained to the media that Sanctuary was a last-minute addition to his album Every Dawn’s a Mountain. However, it was necessary one. Even though the inclusion of Sanctuary is somewhat of an anomaly, it is the only song in this very personal and introspective album to feature a second voice.

'The feeling of urgency'

In an interview with Paste Magazine, Tamino described the writing process for Every Dawn’s a Mountain as having a sense of urgency.

“There was just no room for that in these songs. The feeling [of urgency] was so clear and so strong that it already formed these songs and already coloured them. It would have been inappropriate to approach [the album] from a conceptual place,” he said.

During his live appearances presenting the latest album, Tamino often underscores his deep emotional connection to the songs. “Just as fire can erupt with great force, most of these songs seemed to burst their way into existence,” he expressed.

The presale for Tamino’s show in Cairo closed on 1 September. The tickets are now available on the organizer’s (Nacelle) website.
