Universal says struck first deal for AI music creation

Recording industry giant Universal Music Group (UMG) announced on Thursday that it had struck a licensing deal with AI music generation startup Udio, an industry-first tie-up aimed at launching an AI creation platform next year.

The platform, as yet unnamed, “will be powered by new, cutting-edge generative AI technology that will be trained on authorized and licensed music,” the two companies said in a joint statement, adding that they had settled an outstanding copyright infringement case.

Universal Music Group is the world’s largest music company and a central force in the global entertainment industry. Headquartered in Santa Monica, California (operations), and Hilversum, the Netherlands (corporate), UMG is led by CEO Sir Lucian Grainge and listed on Euronext Amsterdam under the ticker UMG.

The company operates in more than 60 countries and controls a vast catalogue spanning over a century of recorded music, representing legendary artists such as The Beatles, Bob Marley, Queen, and Elton John, as well as contemporary stars including Taylor Swift, Drake, and Billie Eilish.

UMG’s major labels include Republic Records, Interscope Geffen A&M, Def Jam, Capitol Music Group, Island Records, Motown, Virgin Music Group, and the classical-focused Deutsche Grammophon. Its publishing arm, Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), is one of the largest in the world.

The company is also investing heavily in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, NFTs, and virtual performances, to adapt to a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
