For six consecutive nights in Cairo followed by two in Alexandria, Contemporary Dance Night (CDN) will bring eight performances by eight choreographers to the stage – and in a way that hopes to familiarise the Egyptian public with contemporary dance and make it accessible to a larger audience.
For the first time, CDN is hosting three international artists, from the UK, the US and the Netherlands, who will present their work alongside three Egyptian artists. The participating choreographers this year are: Shayma Shoukry, Anna Maria Suijkerbuijk, Mohamed El-Deep, Zosia Jo Dowmunt, Mounir Saeed, Megan Mazarick and Ezzat Ismail Ezzat, founder of CDN.
CDN, now in its fourth run, is an independent initiative launched in 2011 by Ezzat, an Egyptian performer and choreographer who went on to set up his own studio, Ezzat Ezzat Contemporary Dance Studio, in 2012.
"Our goal is to present this form of art to Egyptian audiences, to give artists and dancers the means to develop their art and to build national and international networks for further progress," announced the organisers of this edition of CDN.
The shows will include both live performances and videos.
Cairo performances from 21-26 November will take place at Falaki Theatre. In addition, CDN 2014 in Cairo will be followed by a two-day workshop held by the contributing choreographers on 28-29 November.
Organisers have not yet revealed the venue for the Alexandria performances.
