Art Alert: Play tackling social issues in Upper Egypt

El-Wad Ghorab Wa Al-Qamar brings to the stage social issues of Al-Saeed communities in the south of Egypt

A play titled El-Wad Ghorab Wa Al-Qamar (Crow Boy and The Moon), performed by Kawalis troupe, runs as part of El-Sawy Culturewheel’s theatre festival, ongoing until 21 October.

The play was written by Ashraf Azab and is directed by Mahmoud Abd El-Wahed.

According to Kawalis, the comedy tackles social issues in Al-Saeed (Upper Egypt), pointing to themes such as ignorance, blood feuds and dogmatic customs that do more harm than good.

Kawalis is the theatre troupe from Helwan Faculty of Law that was founded in the 1990s.
