Between 5 and 8 January, the Cairo Opera House will host a Spanish troupe Kafe Pa3 which will stage a musical show titled Café Español (The Spanish coffee shop). The show is written and directed by Maher Zekri.

The show presents a unique gem of Madrid: Café Gijón, a historical coffee shop and restaurant which, since 1888, has been a hub for many renowned Spanish and international figures. It is in Café Gijón that the well known musicians, dancers, choreographers, and actors gathered.

Café Español premiered in November in Spain and its Cairo Opera House performance will be the show’s first international premiere.

The show comprises over 20 artists – the duo who are protagonists of the story, eight live musicians, eight dancers, and a small choir – who will perform several songs representing Spain, Latin America, and other countries and regions. Among many known tunes where flamenco, rumba, and tango will intertwine, the Café Español will also feature Velvet Mornings (Triki Triki) by Demis Roussos and famous Spanish Caminito tango that was sung by Omar Sharif who, as Zekri reveals, were among the attendees of the Café Gijón.

While listening to the music and watching the dance, the audiences will be treated to a captivating footage of Café Gijón and many remarkable artists and other renowned personalities who, for over a century, frequented and continue to frequent this culturally significant coffeehouse.
